Places of Interest
Gateside Guesthouse, in the tranquil village of Hilton, is ideally situated; being an hour's drive away from the beautiful beaches of the Kwazulu Natal coast and a little more than that from the magnificent mountains of the Drakensberg range. We are perfectly positioned as a central point for day trips (or longer) visiting the numerous places of interest within our province. We are in touch with a number of tour guides who offer a variety of trips mentioned below, which can be tailor-made to a single person or groups:
- Mountain walks/hikes
- Abseiling
- Wildlife and nature
- Game parks/Drakensberg
- Pietermaritzburg and Durban
- Angling (there are many dams & rivers offering trout fishing)
- Battlefields
Hilton is also at the entrance to the Midlands Meander. The Meander is exactly that; a choice of routes for a leisurely drive in the country whilst offering many stop-off points at arts & crafts shops, coffee shops & restaurants. Visit nearby Howick with its Anglo-Boer war history and the famous Howick Falls or take a look at the area while mountain biking ( trips catering for the fit and not-so-fit!) The Karkloof valley is 20 minutes drive away and offers the following:
- the Karkloof Canopy tours for the more adventurous amongst us where you can foefie slide through the treetops!
- Horse riding trails for either experienced riders or beginners to view the wildlife or take in the Karkloof Falls from horseback.
- Or perhaps just a peaceful drive through the valley to picnic at the spectacular Falls.
If you take a trip down the hill to Pietermaritzburg, you might like to visit the Botanical Gardens and the Butterfly Farm or just admire the historical architecture around the city.
80 kilometers away in the port of Durban, be sure not to miss the brand new uShaka Marine world: a day goes by too quickly exploring Sea world and the Dolphinarium or having fun with the children in Waterworld. The harbour offers some great seafood restaurants or take a cruise around the harbor or out on Durban Bay!
